Feels like -29 brrr

Winter had a big day yesterday. Lots of snow – almost 10 inches of nice fluffy easy to shovel snow. Chilly at -11C . A bit more snow expected with temperatures seesawing to above zero and back down.
A large hawk sat in the Sycamore tree for two days before the snow. A lot of bird shit for one animal. Delighted to host an apex predator!
Some weirdness on the trunk of the Cornus Venus. At first it looks suspiciously like an animal may have been involved, but no tracks or discernible teeth marks. The temperature did get below double digits, so maybe it froze and fell off. I’ve put chicken wire around it just in case it’s the former. Somewhat concerned.

Yes, winter is here. We have had the first negative double digits at night. -11C predicted tonight. Brrr.
Vegetable garden is put to bed for the season. I put down some manure and some peat (don’t tell anyone) and then a bale of straw.
The focus was tomatoes this year and it paid off. Saving a few for seeds for next year.

Yes it’s officially spring. So giving winter sowing another go after last year’s success. Love it. Basically mother nature does all the work. I just plant the seeds of cold hardy plants, put them in a big container and put the outside in a spot that only gets indirect sunlight. Check every couple of weeks and the seeds wake up naturally at their own pace. Once all risk of frost is passed the lids come off. Plants are ready! No lights, no leggy plants and no hardening off. Fantastic

Key is to give every thing a good cleaning first.

Made it through the coldest days of winter so far. We’ve had a few days with daytime temperatures in the low teens. Wind chill in some spots -23 degrees C

First try at late Summer planting today. Sowed beans, peas and kale in the garlic patch is empty almost. some old seed that I had. Veg seeds are gone from the big box retailers.

March 11 jumped on the winter sowing attempts. Let nature do all the work?

Thrilled to see the daffodils emerging. It was a real old time winter. Snow and cold. But it’s spring and onwards.
