It all over but for a frost

If I had any idea the vegetable garden was going to perform so poorly this year, I would not have bothered at all.

The weather was particularly bad. It started off with a really hot May and June. July was the wettest historically. August was incredibly hot and humid. September was no rain at all except for one major flooding rain storm. Powdery mildew covered almost everything. The spring peas absolutely fried on the vine. I only got about a dozen cucumbers before the mildew got into those and to add insult to injury I only got about 20 tomatoes.

Thinking of letting it go fallow next year. Not quite sure what kind of cover crop to put in, might end up just doing the whole plot in annual flowers and take joy in that.

Wild weather – from super hot and humid and back again

Everything is growing gang busters, just hoping things ripen before the squirrels find out. Tomatoes are gorgeous and the hazelnuts have never been fuller.

Peas and beans are just starting to blossom and cucumbers are now about two feet tall. Nipped the first blossoms off one of the cukes cause they were to close to the soil.

The Brussel sprouts and broccoli look pretty good for being so tightly planted. Started taking the heads off the outer plants I could easily access to see what happens.

Picked six green peppers over two days! Not a lot of recipes seem to feature green peppers.

Almost as big as baseball

Robin’s Egg Blue Peas

Snow peas have gone from blooms to pickable in two days. So gorg.

July has kicked off hot and dry. Could be a week of feels-like mid to high 30s and not a hint of rain in the forecast.

Totally on the down low… a robin has nested in our dogwood right off the balcony. I haven’t got a great picture as she and her nest are well hidden. And trying to be a bit invisible in her immediate vicinity. Don’t want to scare her off. That said, she must have had some sense of what she was getting into during her three days of nest building. She’s been around enough the last 48 hours that she must be roosting. Hope to get a peak at some real Robin’s egg blue!
