It’s been hot

Heat waves in June and July are the new normal. The week in June when were in Nova Scotia, Toronto broke a record and had humidex values in the 40s. July is turning out to be the same. Always amazed how cool it is under the sycamore.

One pot of the three sisters is coming along. Well the corn is. The beans and squash not so much, but they were intentionally planted later.

Got one salad from the spinach I started in the early spring. Just started a second planting with hopefully a larger harvest.

Lettuce and bush beans

The kitchen remodel has started. Spending the days in the garden while the new hardwood is laid.

Clipped the boxwoods last week. Kinda odd on one level, but aesthetically so pleasing.

Everything is so dry I’ve been watering something everyday.

Still planting and potting

Still planting and potting. Enjoyed the winter sown spinach so had new space in the raised box bed on the terrace. So I planted things we eat.

Potted on the rose and the lavender transplants today. An odd combination I think, but they had to get out of their nursery pots. Still have tomatoes to pot and now that the sumac’s are bursting out, have to give them some attention. And of course, more plants to divide.

Typical early June weather. Decent rain. Heat dome on the way.

The Sage is in bloom and bees love it

Tomatoes are all looking sturdy and have needed minor pruning, mostly to get the lower leaves off the ground and remove some side shoots. First blooms and fruit.

Cucumbers are hit and miss, something is eating the beans as they come up and the peas are all pathetic. I think I’ve got too much straw mulch down and have suffocated the soil.? It’s time to empty the composter and move it. So much fun!

Wild weather – from super hot and humid and back again

Everything is growing gang busters, just hoping things ripen before the squirrels find out. Tomatoes are gorgeous and the hazelnuts have never been fuller.

Peas and beans are just starting to blossom and cucumbers are now about two feet tall. Nipped the first blossoms off one of the cukes cause they were to close to the soil.

The Brussel sprouts and broccoli look pretty good for being so tightly planted. Started taking the heads off the outer plants I could easily access to see what happens.

Picked six green peppers over two days! Not a lot of recipes seem to feature green peppers.

Almost as big as baseball
