Winter had a big day yesterday. Lots of snow – almost 10 inches of nice fluffy easy to shovel snow. Chilly at -11C . A bit more snow expected with temperatures seesawing to above zero and back down.
A large hawk sat in the Sycamore tree for two days before the snow. A lot of bird shit for one animal. Delighted to host an apex predator!

Pulled the amaryllis bulbs out from under the attic eaves today. All seven are firm, green and look really healthy. I had packed them in vermiculite in open plastic bags. The vermiculite still has a nice hint of moisture. I want to plant them up this week. Minus 7 feels like -17, some sun and a nice dusting of snow over everything.
Some weirdness on the trunk of the Cornus Venus. At first it looks suspiciously like an animal may have been involved, but no tracks or discernible teeth marks. The temperature did get below double digits, so maybe it froze and fell off. I’ve put chicken wire around it just in case it’s the former. Somewhat concerned.

Yes, winter is here. We have had the first negative double digits at night. -11C predicted tonight. Brrr.
Vegetable garden is put to bed for the season. I put down some manure and some peat (don’t tell anyone) and then a bale of straw.
The focus was tomatoes this year and it paid off. Saving a few for seeds for next year.

First snow of the season and the first significant accumulation (10cm) this year. The earliest in almost 60 years. Crazy. The leaves still on the trees, tomatoes still green. Even dahlias still out – and now dead.

Brilliant day yesterday so I got out the mower and gave the front yards a close cut. Looks great. It was also a chance to mow over some of the leaves. Maybe half of the tree has shedded its foliage. Tomato plants and dahlias still don’t show signs of frost damage. Crazy season.
But the big joy has been the gem corn. The ears didn’t fill out completely. The colours are amazing. I’m going to try popping some once they have dried out. Definitely musing about planting some next year.

And not even the end of them. Still picking cherry tomatoes. Crazy mild weather. No real signs of frost damage in the garden yet.
Got another 55 daffodils in the ground. The forecast has a decent amount of rain tonight and tomorrow and 40% of showers every day next week. I didn’t water them in, but will if the rain doesn’t come.

I have started putting the terracotta pots into the shed. And a bunch of winter prep to go, more pots and the cushions. So glad I downscaled this year!
Cut rosemary and thyme for drying. Cool mornings and evenings sandwich beautiful September days. Absolutely gorgeous weather.
Tomatoes are producing about 2 pounds a day. They are almost done flowering and I’m doubtful they will turn into fruit before it is all over for the season. All in all a great year for tomatoes
