Finished the new composter and still have all my digits. My pants, on the other hand, didn’t fair as well.
I did this last in July 2012. Like then, the wood has been around since the fences went in. So I just had to buy the hardware cloth/metal mesh to line it. Thoughtful attempt to try and keep the critters out and the neighbours happy. This unit is a little smaller at 3‘ x 3‘. Still absolutely delighted with it. And just in time for the fall cleanup.

What the customer wanted
The old lid fits
I wish squirrels had fillings.
Cedar starter studs
AND:

Cherry tomatoes 8feet
Scarlet runners
Cascade hops
Lady bug on asparagus
AND – if you don’t want to build a permanent composter. I’ve also come up with a quickie here and easy solution. Buy the 36 inch roll of wire mesh. Drive a couple of stakes into the ground. Rebar is amazing for this. Then use any bendy wire to stitch up a seam at the two ends and voila a one season composter. Still needs a good watering and stir every couple of weeks. After winter, just tip in over and “pour” it out; plant it up.
